Community Games is an independent voluntary organisation, operating in local communities throughout Ireland. It aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to develop in a healthy and safe environment through experiencing a wide range of sporting and cultural activities. It encourages and fosters community spirit and co-operation. Many of our great sportspeople first experienced success in Community Games and others developed a life-long interest in physical activities due to their participation in Community Games.

Every child is encouraged to participate in the many activities and every adult is very welcome to get involved in coaching and helping the various coaches. It's a great way of having fun, making friends and being active in your community.

The Downs Community Games was established in the early 70's by probably our greatest ever community person, the late Christy Whelehan. It has flourished ever since thanks to the dedication and hard work of many great people over the years.

It caters for children from the Downs, Knockaville, Heathstown, Curraghmore, Baltrasna, Marlinstown and the housing estates of Gleann Petit, Richdale Court and Ardmore Hills of Mullingar. There are winter and summer activities or competitions running from November till May. At present we participate in the following competitions at county level: athletics, swimming, Gaelic football, soccer, basketball, cycling, gymnastics, draughts, chess, art and model-making. We could offer the following activities if more parents got involved: rounders, hurling and camogie, mini rugby and tag rugby, Olympic handball, cross-country running, table tennis, quiz and various talent competitions.

The Downs Community Games is very grateful for the support it receives from the staff of the Downs and Curraghmore schools - help with fundraising, distributing leaflets, giving out information, the use of classrooms etc. It is also very grateful to the Downs GAA officers, committee and members for allowing us free use of their great facilities.
