Well done The Downs

The very impressive stand at The Downs on All Ireland final day.Knew well where The Downs grounds were in Westmeath but many others had to go map searching.

Some were surprised to see the rural Westmeath club host two All Ireland minor hurling finals albeit the B and C competitions last Saturday evening.

Rural it may be but my first visit to the new The Downs complex was a real delight, it possessed all the much sought after modern facilities. A splendid playing surface, stand, clubhouse, parking facilities and perhaps above all a real hearty welcome.

A crowd of some 1,000 people were in attendance and those from the hurling areas of Meath, Roscommon, Wicklow and Sligo were loud in their praise.

Well done The Downs. No need for Mullingar, Navan or Tullamore on this occasion. A proud day for the rural club and their bunch of active stewards. People like the legendary The Downs official Christy Whelehan would surely have provided the "thumbs up" from other playing fields.
